Why are you supposed to open your mouth when a grenade explodes near you?
Exactly. The blast aka shockwave will move in a circle from the grenade, it will bounce off walls like water, actually doubling the effect. This blast wave will squeeze on your torso (guts and lungs.)
If it has nowhere to go, it will pop you like a balloon.(destroy your lungs or other internal organs like your kidneys.) If your guts squeezes up, it hits your lungs.
If your lungs can vent the squeeze (from your guts and from being squeezed by the blast) and out of your mouth, you can minimize the damage.
